The overall framework of SDM’s business activities is expressed in the slogan, “The Future of Your Healthy Skin is Our Commitment” In these areas, the R&D Division strives to create innovative products through integration of two kinds of research activities: product development research to design and commercialize products that meet consumers’ needs, and fundamental research to study materials and understand unique mechanisms we find.
In product development research, product design is conducted based on thorough understanding of consumers’ habits and needs and application of our research findings. Product technology is also advanced enough to commercialize the product design.
In fundamental research, discovering the facts behind phenomena is done by utilizing the advanced sciences and technologies in various fields, including chemistry, physics, and biology. This research plays an important role in developing truly valuable products. Underlying these R&D activities is the integration of science and technology. With a wide range of fat, oil, and surfactant science, which are the origin of our business, biological science, polymer science, and applied physics, we integrate production engineering such as chemical process engineering, assembling and processing technology, and packaging and filling technology to produce superior products that exceed consumer expectations. In addition, the R&D Division works closely with related divisions such as Marketing and Production. Outside the company, the R&D Division conducts many collaborative projects with various research institutes, universities, and other companies.
A single science or technology cannot create valuable products. We pursue new R&D techniques targeting the next generation through cross-industrial and interdisciplinary collaboration beyond the current academic framework.
ORGANIZATIONAL OPERATIONAL
The R&D Division consists of Laboratories for product development and those for fundamental research. The former conducts research to commercialize new products and improve the current products in close collaboration with the Business Divisions responsible for marketing. The latter studies material science, biological science, production engineering, structure analysis, and toxicology across the product categories, in addition to medium- to long-term research to create new business.
Both Laboratories belong to the R&D Division, where cross-functional project members from the two Laboratories study each issue. This matrix operation promotes a flexible and dynamic exchange of knowledge and expertise and accelerates a deep understanding of projects.
The flexible organizational operation is observed in one large lab room where many researchers with different expertise in diversified fields work together. This open working environment promotes an everyday exchange of a wide variety of knowledge and expertise across the fields, inspires new ideas, and encourages cooperative attitudes among researchers so that the potential of the R&D division is maximized.
This operation is supported by the open and active corporate culture that respects researchers’ initiative. They independently think about research subjects and plan, propose, and carry out their study.
